According to the Vedas the soul is situated in the heart. The soul is very small, its size is one ten-thousandth part of the tip of a hair. Though minute, it is our real self; our material body is just the outside covering.
Together with the soul in our heart resides the Supersoul, or the God in the heart. He provides the energy on which our body runs. There must be regular periods where the soul is in direct contact with the Supersoul in order to ‘recharge the batteries.’ We call these periods ‘deep sleep’ without dreaming. The scientists also know that long term deprivation of dreamless sleep can lead to serious health problems or even death.
Though very tiny, the soul is all-pervading inside the body. This is made possible by the consciousness, the energy of the soul. Just as one candle can illuminate a whole room, the soul illuminates the whole body by the consciousness. Therefore we are aware of the pains and the pleasures of the entire body. The consciousness spreads through the life airs and the blood. Therefore, when there is no blood circulation in some part of the body we become unaware of it.
The soul is aware of his own body, but he does not know what is going on in other bodies. The Supersoul however is all-pervading in all bodies and is thus aware of all of them. This is one of the differences between the soul (living being) and the Supersoul (God).
